He studied film at the National University of Colombia and holds a master's degree in media arts from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM). His work explores a heterogeneous notion of magic and ecology through images and narratives that playfully navigate the edges of documentary film, photography, and light art. His projects have been presented at film festivals and art exhibitions such as the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal, 25 FPS Int.Experimental Film and Video Festival (Zagreb), and the National Artists' Salon (Colombia), among others.&nbsp; Alongside his personal projects, he has been part of artistic collectives and has worked as creative technologist, director of photography, light designer, editor, VFX artist, research and programming assistant for documentary and experimental film events. ︎ Juan Francisco Rodríguez es un artista y cineasta colombiano que vive en Colonia, Alemania. Estudió cine en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y tiene un máster en artes mediales por la Academia de Artes y Medios de Colonia (KHM). Y con certeza reafirma que todas las formas de la vida tienen un parentesco mágico: los juegos de manos, las apariciones espectrales en el monte, los animales y las plantas y las canchas de fútbol y Spiderman. A light is conducted through the interior of a rose quartz. Thanks to a chain of optics, the light is focused on the crystal and projected as an image. Its functioning is analogous to cinema projectors, however, instead of film, the light projects the interior of a moving mineral, whose solid and subterranean condition is elevated to a an aerial instance. El funcionamiento de este aparato es análogo a los proyectores de cine, sin embargo, en lugar del celuloide, la luz proyecta el movimiento de un mineral, cuya condición sólida y subterránea se eleva a una instancia aérea. El proyector podría considerarse un aparato cinematográfico y la imagen proyectada vendría a ser una película silente en bucle. The process of printing an image on light-sensitive material is reminiscent of the photosynthesis process that plants undergo when they capture sunlight. In turn, the surface of a lagoon acts as a mirror, reflecting or ‘projecting’ images. There is another remarkable link between cinema and nature, specifically with water. A film like Borde de nieve, which uses both analogue film and digital images, is made possible by a generous stream of consciousness, like a rippling river of ideas. Through disjointed fragments, the film moves us through landscapes and generates a pilgrimage experience. The melting mountain peaks serve as a metaphor; the vanishing ice releases new manifestations of the landscape. The ecosystem underwent various forms of violence; layer after layer of melting exposes human passage and destruction. Social crises thus become visible in the biosphere: rivers and mountains as witnesses of a struggle. The mountain ranges lead us to the past or the future, both as access or escape routes. The film’s central mountain thus provides a geological, spatial, temporal, and symbiotic encounter. Avanzan los primeros minutos del cortometraje Borde de nieve (2020) de Juan Francisco Rodríguez y se van revelando cada vez más manchones en el paisaje, como archipiélagos en un blanco mar. Notamos cómo el paisaje se transforma, los detalles de la montaña comienzan a revelarse como entornos conocidos: parece que la nieve —mejor dicho, su ausencia— dibuja calles; parece que la nieve —ahora protagonista— se convierte en ríos que desembocan en el helado mar. Detrás de las nubes se levantan las montañas cada vez más negras, sin nieve. Un mar negro con mucho polvo blanco. Sobre un fondo negro, las letras blancas nos informan de la muerte del último glaciar en Colombia, revelando paisajes que se había guardado para sí mismo durante cuarenta mil años. Una cámara fija nos traslada al interior de una oscura construcción deteriorada donde la tenue luz solar que deja pasar el ausente techo dirige nuestra mirada hacia lo que parece ser un hoyo con diminutas plantas creciendo al borde. Con la misma rigidez del plano anterior, se nos muestra una habitación donde podemos observar un tragaluz y no solo la luz que lo traspasa para alimentar a las plantas que son más vigorosas, abundantes y diversas que antes. Momentos antes de verlo, se escuchan las pisadas de un hombre que se dirige a contemplar la luz que cae del techo. Las imágenes subsiguientes nos hacen saber que estamos en una labor pesada: señalamientos de no pasar, botas que entierran la pala en la negra tierra, picos que aflojan el sustrato que guarda minerales preciosos. El casi imperceptible movimiento de la tierra deslavada y los sonidos industriales nos introducen al mundo de las máquinas encargadas de transformar lo que se les pone enfrente: una aplanadora pasa encima de las irregularidades que forman el suelo para que unos pies caminen sin problema. Lo que parece un sonido de alerta se mezcla con el chillido de las máquinas mientras observamos la tierra en su estado más vulgar y opaco. En contraste con la severidad de los planos pasados, con el sonido de la tierra corriendo que se termina por integrar al de las percusiones, entramos a un mundo antiguo que solo existe en los archivos. Las imágenes en blanco y negro nos revelan la tierra en sus parajes más íntimos y vírgenes: vemos esas estrías que ha acumulado a lo largo de millones de años, a las que los geólogos llamaron estratos. Se nos muestra suave y blanda, pero también filosa y monumental, resguardando entre sus peñascos la vida que crece en ella, los ríos que fluyen sin parar a lo largo y ancho de su cuerpo, el agua atrapada en quietas lagunas esperando a crecer o transformarse. Mientras más vemos de ella, más se revela hostil: arriba de las nubes, las piedras son más grandes y sólidas, la nieve cubre los secretos de las altas montañas dejando solo pequeños fragmentos descubiertos. La última imagen que vemos de este mundo antiguo es la de unos hombres caminando por estos recovecos de la Tierra. ¿Qué quieren descubrir si la nieve ya está descubriendo todo? Regresamos al sórdido mundo transformado que hemos construido para encontrarnos con una revolvedora de cemento que trabaja la tierra para convertirla en agua. La tierra gira, cae, se mezcla mientras la escuchamos rebotar en el metal de la máquina; una cortina de polvo cae frente a nosotros con un ruido que recuerda al movimiento tectónico de la Tierra, imperceptible para los oídos humanos, pero capturado por las máquinas que ingeniamos. Juan Francisco Rodríguez logra transfigurar esas mismas imágenes y sonidos en el tranquilo susurro del agua y el ostentoso caer de una cascada. Finalmente el agua se mueve y choca con pedazos de glaciar, que parece puro al principio, pero, entre más lo exploramos, se va ensuciando. Instead of film, each slide frame contains a moss herbarium: a living, moist and changing micro-ecosystem. The superimposition of images constantly creates new plant motifs.
